Bring in a company with a different year-end

A company that closes its books in March can sit in a group that closes in December. Tell BrizoConsol when the company’s year starts, and it moves the company’s closed earnings onto the group’s year for you.

You will needThe company in your hierarchy, loaded and mapped, as in Buy a new subsidiary. A Retained Earnings account in the group chart of accounts.
By the endThe company’s figures read on the group’s year: profit and loss unchanged, retained earnings and current year earnings split at the group’s year-end, and the balance sheet balanced in every month.

1Understand what the year-end changes

In the running example the group’s year runs January to December. Company G, a Singapore company on Xero, closes its books on 31 March, so its year starts in April. It earns about 10,000 a month.

Company G’s year runs April to March and the group’s January to December. At Company G’s close in April, BrizoConsol debits retained earnings with the year Company G closed; at the group’s close in January, it credits retained earnings with Company G’s earnings for the group’s year
Two calendars, and the two entries that keep them apart.
Every monthNothing changes. Company G’s figures are read at the same month-end as every other company, and its profit and loss counts in the month it was earned.
The problemIn April, Company G’s own books move April–March earnings into its retained earnings. The group, still in its 2026 year, also counts January–March in current year earnings — the same 30,000 twice, and a balance sheet that does not balance.
The fixBrizoConsol posts a System Fiscal Year Alignment journal at each close: it takes Company G’s closed year back out of retained earnings in April, and puts its earnings for the group’s year in at the group’s close in January. Retained earnings then always holds Company G’s earnings up to the group’s last year-end.

2Check the company’s fiscal year

  1. Open Settings → Global Settings → Organisation Hierarchy, and click Company G.
  2. Under Organisation Details, check Fiscal Year Starts shows Apr.
Organisation Hierarchy with Company G selected: Organisation Details shows Fiscal Year Starts Apr, From Xero

Connected companyThe month comes from Xero, QuickBooks, MYOB or Zoho and is marked From that system. If it is wrong, correct it there; it cannot be changed in BrizoConsol.
Uploaded companyClick the edit icon next to Fiscal Year Starts, choose the month the company’s own year starts in, and click Confirm.

Set the month the company’s books really use, not the group’s. It tells BrizoConsol when the company’s year-to-date figures restart and when it closes its earnings — setting it to January to match the group would misread its figures, not align them.

3Let the alignment post

There is no button to press. Whenever the group is recalculated — after each night’s load, a mapping change, or a change to a company’s fiscal year — BrizoConsol works out the alignment journals for every company whose year starts in a different month from the group’s, and posts or corrects them.

WhereOn the group, to its Retained Earnings account. Company G’s own figures are not touched.
Which scenarioActual only. Budgets and forecasts have no year-end close, so there is nothing to align.
If you change the yearThe journals are replaced. Set the company to the group’s month, and they are removed.

4Check the result

  1. Open Reports → Balance Sheet for Apr-2026 — the first month after Company G’s close. NET ASSET equals EQUITY.
  2. Open Reports → Profit & Loss for the same month. Company G’s figures are what its own books show: the alignment changes equity only.
  3. Open Review → Elim. & Journals Report for Apr 2026, search for Fiscal Year Alignment, and click the row to see its lines.
Elim. & Journals Report for Apr 2026, searched for Fiscal Year Alignment: the System Fiscal Year Alignment entry for Company G, posted by System, expanded to show Retained Earnings debited 120,000 and Current Year Earnings credited 120,000
The search (1), April’s alignment entry (2), and its two lines (3).

The [CYE] line is not a real account: current year earnings are worked out from the year’s profit and loss, so the report shows it to make the entry balance. A loss reverses the two sides. Look in January 2027 for the second entry, which credits retained earnings with Company G’s 2026 earnings.

5If something does not look right

What you seeWhat to do
The balance sheet does not balance from AprilCheck Company G’s Fiscal Year Starts is the month its books use. If it shows the group’s month, no alignment is posted.
No Fiscal Year Alignment entries at allCheck the group chart of accounts has an account of type Retained Earnings — the journals have nowhere to go without one — and that you are looking at the Actual scenario.
